AWAKE

AWAKE is a physical literacy-based before-school program offered to children at the Wolfville School. The goal of the program is to provide children with an opportunity to gain the physical, social, and cognitive benefits of engaging in physical activity in a safe, fun, and supportive environment. AWAKE is offered three days per week throughout the school year: one day for children in grades P-2; and two days for children in grades 3+. The program is free to join and run by Acadia student volunteers.

Cardiac Maintenance

Exercise is an essential part of heart health. For people with heart disease, or individuals at high risk for heart disease such as those with diabetes, exercise is very beneficial to improve heart function and overall physical functioning. For individuals with chronic disease, participation in a supervised program will often make them feel more confident when beginning to exercise, and help them to maintain an exercise pattern over the long term. The Acadia Cardiac Maintenance (ACM) Program is instructed and led by a Kinesiologist (CSEP-Certified Exercise Physiologist).
Location: Acadia Athletics Complex
Times: Monday.  Wednesday  & Fridays 7:30- 8:20AM
Cost: $60 per semester or $100 for academic year

Hannah Miller Hockey

Hannah Miller was a 7-year-old minor hockey player in the Acadia Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) Quick Start program. She loved to play hockey and her enthusiasm was evident to everyone.

In the spring of 2005, shortly after the end of her first hockey season, she was tragically killed in a car accident in Port Williams. To perpetuate her love of hockey this fund was established in her memory.   In March 2006, the 1st Annual Hannah Miller Memorial Hockey Tournament was organized by Acadia University Recreation Management students.

An Annual March Break Hannah Miller Memorial Tournament is held at Acadia for IP 1 and IP 2 divisions.   Acadia students organize the tournament in its entirety as part of an academic curriculum project.  Hannah’s family take part in the festivities every year, stating they are ‘grateful for the work of the Acadia students, and really enjoy seeing all of the little smiling hockey players on this fun-filled day of hockey.

The Hannah Miller Memorial Fund is a not-for-profit organization that operates under a Board of Acadia University, Acadia Minor Hockey Association (AMHA), and community members.  The fund gives back to the hockey community by providing some financial relief primarily for underprivileged AMHA players, creates opportunities for female hockey development and initiatives, as well as award an annual scholarship to a chosen Acadia Student.

KinderSkills

Kinderskills is a program that provides preschool aged children with a variety of movement activities in order to promote their development. Encouraging many different types of movement can benefit children by contributing to the development and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle, which in-turn promotes self-confidence, and emotional, social, and cognitive skills.

Each Kinderskills child receives one-to-one attention from a student instructor. Gross and fine movement activities will be individualised according to each child’s current level of abilities. A student instructor will assess your child’s current level of abilities in a number of areas, and will then implement play-based activities to promote development in these areas.
